How are these services provided?
Times Out, Inc. provides each person with a companion who has been recruited from the Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area universities and colleges. Each companion is cross-trained in CPR and First Aid, crisis intervention and resolution, and an overview of intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and pervasive developmental disorders. Times Out, Inc. uses an application screening process in order to match the person with a companion more effectively, taking into account location, personal interests, scheduling, and transportation needs.
How much do these services cost?
Times Out, Inc. requires each person seeking companion services to submit an application with a $25 application fee. Companion services are $15 per hour once a suitable companion has been chosen. Additional costs may apply depending on the activities. Once sufficient funding is available, the fees for service will be based on a sliding scale.

Who is eligible for these services?

  • Chronological age of at least fifteen
  • Diagnosis of intellectual disabilities, mental illness, or a pervasive developmental disorder
  • Self-determined to participate and capable of involvement in social activities
  • Able to access companion vehicle or have their own handicapped accessible vehicle
  • Communicative
  • Self-management of hygiene and self-care
  • Eligibility of consumers with special needs such as acting out behaviors will be considered individually. Determination of eligibility is determined on safety to self and others.
